This just shows how hard men worked just to get a meal for their family.

My grandfather worked at this colliery which was also known as Lamb and Moores. It was at the junction of scot lane and woodhouse lane. He told me of an occasion when the undermanager and the fireman were travelling around the pit and the u/manager asked whose working place it was, to be told by the fireman, "mr smith works there" the u/manager retorted, "tell mr smith to take his tools out, he's sacked. There is only one mr. here and that's me!"
