As kids growing up by the sea in the 50's, we were out as soon as the weather was warm enough, and so developed a tan without burning. Sunscreen was unheard of. Occasionally a dab of Nivea Creme might be applied on a particularly hot day. The sensation of this being applied to skin which already had sand on it, with the vigour that only a mother can muster, was unforgettable!
